The Lift Industry Mental Health Charter was formed in 2022 by Mark Harding, a mental health first aider, and Director of Ascension Lift Solutions Ltd. Mark has been in the lift industry for over 25 years and worked across all aspects of the industry from  lift mate, to technician/tester to Director of multiple lift companies, and now his own lift consultancy.

In 2021 and 2022 Mark was working with Mental Health organisations helping to arrange internal mental health courses, it become clear that there was a desire to promote and support mental health within the pressurised lift industry.

I do lots of yoga which is all about getting out of your mind and into your body… Meditation and being active are ways in which I manage my own stress, and thus far I have been fortunate enough not to have suffered any poor mental health, but I have seen many people around me struggle… I would have always offered a hug and a cuppa, but joining the Charter and becoming a Mental Health First Aider has given me the correct tools to help and signpost people effectively. I hope it also lets people know, internal and external to the Lift Industry, that I have open arms and listening ears, whenever they may be needed. The Charter is aiming to raise awareness, reduce stigma and promote positive mental health and I am super proud to be a part of it.

I am proud to support the Lift Industry Mental Health Charter, an initiative that is deeply personal to me. Having been brought up in the lift industry, I have witnessed first hand the challenges it presents. I have faced my own mental health struggles and, heartbreakingly, lost a loved one to suicide who worked in the industry. This has fuelled my passion for mental health awareness and training. As both a committee member and the trainer for the charter, I am committed to supporting positive change, breaking the stigma, and ensuring that no one in the industry feels alone.

I feel in a privileged position being on the periphery to be there to assist, knowing first hand what it is like to live with mental health conditions and was honoured to be invited to join the Committee.

Since joining the lift industry in 2003, I've developed not only professional expertise but also a deep understanding of the mental health challenges that can affect both employers and employees in our field.

My commitment to the Lift Industry Mental Health Charter stems from personal experience with mental health challenges in both my professional and personal life. I believe strongly that listening with compassion and investing time to understand someone's struggles can be transformative.

As an active supporter of the Charter, I am dedicated to helping others recognise they aren't alone in their experiences.

Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of working alongside remarkable individuals, and I see my involvement with the Charter as an opportunity to give back to our industry community - offering support, understanding, and a compassionate ear to those who need it.

My goal is to use my position and experiences to foster a more supportive, open environment where conversations about mental health become a natural part of our industry culture.

I am honoured and privileged to be involved with lift Mental health Charter. To use my knowledge and understanding of mental heath as both an employer & employee. I have experienced mental health issues in my work & personal life. Stepping out of my comfort zone to run my own lift company for nearly 8 years now. I like to think that anyone can be helped and saved by investing the time into getting to know someone and there problems just by listening to them. I want to help people to realise they are not alone, and to open up about there hopes and fears. My phone is on 24/7 365.
